Meningitis Outbreak Information
You may recently have heard about an outbreak of a rare type of meningitis which has occurred in a group of patients receiving epidural steroid injections.
While the exact cause of the outbreak is still under investigation by a federal government agency, the Center for Disease Control, it is suspected by officials there that a pharmacy in New England which makes the drug (methylprednisolone) produced three lots that were contaminated and may be responsible for causing the infections.
The Pain and Surgical Center of Langhorne HAS NOT AND DOES NOT purchase any of its supply of methylprednisolone from the suspected pharmacy. Historically, epidural steroid injections have had a very low risk of complications. This outbreak appears to be related to the contamination of the drug used in the injections and not the procedure itself.
We will be continuing to monitor the investigation. If you have questions or concerns please contact your physician or the surgical center at 267-212-5000.
We would also recommend that you stay current on the investigation and receive further guidance by following the Center for Disease Control website (www.cdc.gov) or the Pennsylvania Department of Health website (www.health.state.pa.us).
